Introduction

Gravel River is a mom and pop shop, meaning that it is small enough to make money and big enough to require a family effort.
Some days are good and they make money and some are bad where you make nothing

the duties required to run an efficient business such as this are numerous.

the restaurant you have
the motel which requires cleaning, some times daily laundry,
making beds and upkeep

the liquor store,

Grounds need to be kept cut and cleaned possibly with the summer students

grocery for campers

Shopping for supplies

take orders of food
cook items on the menu,

do dishes and cleaning of tables
Keep restaurant clean

look after store and liquor outlet

target the camps out in the bay and at gurney

there are numerous camps at nipigon bay Gurney and gravel and we need to supply them with their camping and eating needs, also a good take out service.

I would suggest that we expand our product sales to more grocery items.

We will require a website for Information and Advertising

Webpage cost    15.00 per month , Domain registration   gravelriver.ca    15:00

total cost
200.00 per year
https://whc.ca/domain-names/new

Starlink for internet, bank transactions ect. 300.00 hardware, 100 per month subscription

set up meeting to discuss the opportunity with band members who are interested in working at gravel river once i find out who wants to work there.
community cooks could supply some or all of the menu items.

discuiss with cooks what they believe they can handle or how they would like to utilize the facility
eg:  waiting, cooking, serving, washing dishes, cleaning tables
 ect.

I would recommend a daily special for the community cooks who may want to sell their meals and a take out which could easily be done with students.

Develop Menu
sample

A simplified menu should be developed

and specials cooked by community chefs for lunch and dinner
soup and bannock

Might be better to make the restaurant a take out
restaurant for daily specials
like supper  in the evenings by community cooks

Questions for the Band

what is going to be the method of payment for the employees in the beginning

Is the employees going to be paid from the band
book keeping
Bank account
Supplies

who is going to renew the liquor license

knowledge of water pumps and sewage, maintenance of them and the buildings. and or train a youth band member to do it.

Possible Store inventory expansion to supply food for the campers and discuss possibility of supplying the healthy snack for students.

other items to consider developing

business hours summer and winter

rental of motel units to the construction personal coming to renovate community hall and building the houses should be a requirement for people doing bussiness with the band to use gravel.

this way we can also provide them their meals with their stay

possible trailer park on property
kayak rentals
propane exchange
charcoal for camps
bait and hook shop
ammunition

possible partition of land for future camps/houses

Sleep in a teepee

how are the people going to be paid, a program, welfare, or profits

will the band do this licenced, using tax laws or as if it were on reserve. where we dont pay provincial taxes

or is this like a personal purchase of a business where your  required to comply with all ont. and canadian business law.

Business Registration: Register your business with the appropriate government bodies. Licenses and Permits: Obtain necessary licenses and permits, such as health permits, liquor licenses, and building permits. Zoning Laws: Verify that the property complies with local zoning laws for commercial use.Jul 18, 2024

is gravel going to be part of any of the land claim / reserve expansion

budget requirement
Band pays hydro, starlink,

going to require meeting with employees /cooks to put together a menu that they can handle, what specials they make, and the other  aspects of the job, they may require remuneration for their participation

I know that if i offered this to someone wanting to get into business they would grab it in a second, and they would make it work, but its going to be harder to find a band member on reserve to do it. we need someone who can dedicate themselves to doing all of the work or a lot of it or we can train the students to run it.

we might find a band member off reserve

we need to make gravel river work as a business.

We might have to change the nature of the business.

the land is in a good area for multiple purposes.

need to go over the books to see what your  dealing with, and have an earmark to achieve, though im sure they made a living with it, they were dedicated to making it work though.

I have looked at the condition of all buildings, plumbing, electrical and found them to be in good shape with little repair and renovations needed.

I will need a student to help out there to get the store open and grounds maintained

Gravel River

Nipigon Bay local

45 camps

Gurney by the sea is 5 miles away
