Traditional Diet

Policy

a traditional diet includes
plant, animal, fish, bird

Robinson Superior Treaty 1850

Feed, train.  exercise our rights in our whole traditional territories

assure food security/traditional diet.

training our kids to exercise their rights to train and feed our people should be part of their education

Aboriginal and Treaty Rights can feed our people

long ago the people/ojibway survived on this harsh land and traded with others, We survived because we shared what we had with others that need it. We need to bring that tradition back.

When Gerald Bouchard was the chief we did that, we hunted and gave it to band members, i remember going to pick up moose as part of our job. At that time moose were plentiful in the area, gas cheap and finding a moose wasn't that hard, its getting a lot harder with all the sports hunters.

In 1850 the Pays Plat Band was arbitrarily included into the Robinson Superior Treaty with the Ojibways of Lake superior, guaranteeing our rights to hunt and fish as we have been in the habit of doing

The RST 1850 incorporates a specified land from stretching the whole of lake superior from pigeon river to the height of land to batchewana Bay.. within that territory Pays Plat/PawGwaSheeng has territories from gurney to dead horse creek and north approx. 40 miles along lake superior, this is our homelands. approximately 3500 to 4000 square mile of Traditional lands.
note our territories include the water

We have Aboriginal and Treaty rights to that territory, a territory that can feed our people with ease, the traditional lands were guaranteed in the treaty and we must take control and utilize it for our members benefit.

We must exercise our Aboriginal and treaty rights to ensure our people the traditional diet they had prior to the treaty and should have now. The Band must make a commitment to protect and ensure our treaty rights to hunt and fish

Our Treaty and or Aboriginal Rights

Treaty Rights are obtained from signing a treaty , they consist of right the government dictates,

Aboriginal Rights are inherent rights, they are rights that you are born with and no one can take them away from you, Our Aboriginal rights define our culture which is one of hunting, fishing, trapping, foraging, and gathering, we must be more protective of our territories.

The survival of our culture depends on our ability to exercise our Aboriginal Rights within our Traditional Territories. With our moose becoming more and more scarce in the immediate area it is necessary to have to travel sometimes a hundred miles or more to find one.  This situation makes it impossible for many families to hunt their moose and smaller game is no different..

Our culture and traditions cannot be exercised by most of our members because of the cost of traveling to find the scarce resource, the need of a firearm or ammo,

We need to think about using our traditional territories to feed our people their traditional food and especially our elders who can no longer hunt their own food, single mothers, poor, handi capped, non hunters. and all members who cannot obtain it themselves.

it is our Right to live off our land

How can we protect Our Rights to hunt, fish, trap, forage and gather on our territories, We need to use it to Feed our Families.

We need to manage our own resources it is the only way that we will be able to insure our people that their rights to hunt fish, gather and trap are maintained.

Map of homeland
traditional territories

Native people are suppose to be known for helping each other like long ago, we have a community of people who dont really know each other, we are from different places, we must try to protect and utilize pays plats traditional lands.

Our Aboriginal and Treaty Rights mean nothing when you are unable to exercise those rights

A
Traditional Diet

must be a Community Standard

The Chief and Council must commit to  making our rights to hunt and fish and enjoy traditonal meal one that is enjoyed by all our members.and not only the working class.

to achieve a food supply from traditional and farmed methods that will feed and or subsidize  all members of the Pays Plat Band should a problem exist within the Canadian food supply for an extended period of time and because they have a right to eat traditional foods,  it should not be privilege for the upper class of Indian that can afford the luxury of exercising our hunting and fishing rights because they have money

with all this war being threatened and now this pandemic event that we are going through you never know what could happen, and its better to be safe than sorry

Use our Aboriginal Rights to hunt and fish and feed the people
Preserve a large amount of our veggies, meat and fish, by freezing, drying, preserving and fermenting food for our peoples future use.

plan our use of animals for our food needs and their preservation but we need to use this resource to protect it and manage it

Traditional Diet  will include plants, herbs mushrooms tree parts grasses mosses trace minerals, fish, birds

The cost of food should be a growing concern, the price of vegetables is sky rocketing and will only continue as food producing countries are suffering droughts and floods that are wiping out a lot of the food supply. Russia is trying to capitalize on this, they only grow organic and will not allow GMO's as is many other countries and especially the USA and Canada

We need to assure the Food Security of the Pays Plat Band members in their search for a safe and nutritious food supply. Aside from our wild meats, foods and medicines we need other foods such as brocolli, carrots, kale, turnips, ect, and should be organic and it can be grown every year in a community or personal garden

It is a well known fact that most food today lacks the nutrition it should have, much of it is artificially fertilized, sprayed with pesticides and herbicides and a great variety is Genetically Modified Organisms which have never existed in nature.

Processed foods are full of sugars and salts that contribute to diabetes, obesity, heart and other ailments in the native community.

It seems the only good foods for you that contain all the nutrition, vitamins and minerals you need are in Organic grown foods where no poisonous chemicals are used in growing it.

There has to be a reason for the skyrocketing Diabetes, heart, obese, cancers in the indigenous populations and we should be questioning, the vaccines, Processed Foods, gmos, lack of nutrition in foods, we need to educate our selves on preventing these diseases and not trying to get rid of them once were infected with one, most of them are preventable.

a community garden that will cover most of the Reserve with raised growing beds, put raised beds on many public areas and in many yards, to grow organic food for the members and give them the opportunity to eat wholesome good food that would be free to the community members.

These gardens could be maintained by summer programs to teach kids how to grow your own foods, they would be supervised and trained in gardening.

This program would train our younger ones how to grow their own food, and how to preserve it for future use.

preserving food can make a harvest last indefinitely, vegetables, meat, fish and herbs can be canned, dried, smoked,

salted to assure you eat if some emergency were to happen.

and this must be taught to our children as part of their education along with our traditional sources of food harvesting .and the band should use the student programs to maintain the gardens throughout the summers

An aboriginal/Treaty right means nothing
When you can't afford
or are unable
to exercise
that right

you have a right to eat a traditional diet and the band has a
responsibility to help provide you with exercising your right which is a collective right that we all have as members of the band.

A traditional Diet should and
It must become a
Community standard

EXERCISING OUR
ABORIGINAL RIGHTS
CAN FEED OUR PEOPLE

We have Aboriginal Rights that allow us to hunt fish gather and use other resources on our traditional lands.

All of our members should have traditional food in their freezers and the ability to eat a traditional diet. The ability to hunt our traditional foods in close proximity to us has diminished and has made the cost to hunt a major obstacle in the exercising of our Aboriginal Rights and our ability to feed our families.

This needs to change, Our lands are our future

a traditional diet includes
all the foods,  meat and fish,
HERBS AND PLANTS AND MEDICINES
that we use to sustain ourselves.

At the same time we exercise our rights to more of the
resources on Pays Plats traditional territories and train our
youth how to hunt fish, harvest and to live off our land

EXERCISING OUR ABORIGINAL RIGHTS CAN FEED OUR PEOPLE

ARE YOU
HAVING A HARD TIME MAKING ENDS MEET&
and YOU CAN’T AFFORD TO HUNT OR FISH FOR THE FAMILY

MAYBE YOU DON’T KNOW HOW TO HUNT/FISH OR CAN’T BECAUSE OF A DISABILITY, OR ARE AGED OR  SIMPLY CANT AFFORD TO HUNT OR FOR ANY REASON IT SHOULDN'T MAKE YOU INELIGIBLE TO EAT YOUR TRADITIONAL FOODS, OR EXERCISE YOUR RIGHTS TO EAT A TRADITIONAL DIET.

OUR MEMBERS
HAVE A RIGHT TO A TRADITIONAL DIET

WE MUST ESTABLISH OUR NEEDS TO THE RESOURCES IN OUR TRADITIONAL TERRITORIES AND PROVIDE IT TO OUR MEMBERS WHO CANT GET IT.

Our territories must be utilized to their potential for the Pays Plat Band members to exercise their Aboriginal and traditional rights

WE should PROVIDE A TRADITIONAL DIET TO THOSE BAND MEMBERS WHO CAN’T GET IT

WE must USE OUR TRADITIONAL TERRITORIES TO FEED ALL OUR members..

WE WILL TRAIN OUR YOUTH THEIR CULTURE to hunt and fish
WITHIN OUR traditional  TERRITORIES.

WE MUST CLAIM OUR TERRITORIES & RESOURCES & PROTECT THEM FOR OUR CHILDREN'S FUTURE USE AND OUR FOOD SECURITY.

WE NEED TO TAKE MORE RESPONSIBILITY AND FEED ALL OUR PEOPLE FROM OUR TERRITORIES. TOO MANY ARE GOING WITHOUT THEIR TRADITIONAL FOODS

Our Lands and Resources are our Aboriginal Rights,

these rights are important and define who we are
we must assure our members the ability to exercise their Aboriginal rights to feed their families from their traditional territories

we need to use all area’s of our traditional territories to feed our members and exercise our rights in.

It cost a lot of money to hunt these days and we cant let the cost of travel to our food sources, or any reason to essentially cancel out our Aboriginal Rights for our people who want to eat a traditional diet.

An Aboriginal Right means nothing
When you can't afford to use it.

The Band must invest more resources into our Aboriginal Rights and our use of those rights on the traditional territories of pawgwasheeng.

We must never forget that those resources are our peoples for their benefit. The cost of getting to where the animals (resource) are is getting costlier and out of reach of most of the Band members because of the sports hunting/fishing, logging, mining ect. in our immediate area our traditional food is now out of reach to most of us

Our Aboriginal Rights must be exercised To feed ALL OUR PEOPLE

We must assure that our people have the food that their Aboriginal Rights guarantee them,

we can’t allow being poor, challenged or unable to hunt for any reason as an excuse to not exercising your right and impair your ability to feed yourself or your family, this is the time you need those rights more than ever, remember hunting is not only for the men.

The Band must take responsibility to provide the resources needed which will allow our members to exercise their aboriginal Rights to feed their families and eat a traditional diet.

We must encourage the use of our Aboriginal Rights within our traditional territories by providing the funds needed to harvest and transport and process the resource for our members in need of traditional food but cant get it for themselves. We will also map and manage the resources with in our territories of all natural resources available.

Whether you live on or off the Reserve you have a right to traditional foods and we must help provide and harvest it for many of our members that can not do it for themselves

Helping members to have a traditional diet will work to benefit not only the living standards but will improve the members overall health and welfare from the better standard of meat, fish, wild food, herbs ect.

We have many families that would love to have moose meat and other traditional food because they cant afford to get it, many are working families, single moms that could use the help to feed their kids, and many unable because of physical problems and age, financial, ect.

This program will also train our younger generation in the hunt and teach the knowledge to live off the resources available to them within their traditional territories.

Hunting parties can be planned to involve younger hunters for training purposes and the year round activities of nature. Hunting will involve planning and moving to areas so as not to hunt out a particular section, mapping of our resource
